Second Year Boys Basketball (Wednesday 09-03-2017)
The second year boys played host to St. Joseph’s Fairview for the Quarter Final of the Plate. The lads started off extremely slow and took a while to settle. Joey’s put up a few long-range shots, which was a huge confidence knock for the lads. After a very poor quarter from TCS, Joey’s lead 3-7.
The second quarter saw 5 sets of fresh legs and the hope of a more confident performance. Some Trojan defending from Hamzat and John Duffy lead to several turnovers from Joey’s. Zach Heffernan was quick to scoop up any loose ball and ran the court well alongside Hamzat. The lads put up several good shots but were extremely unlucky not to convert.
The third quarter saw the starting five return to the court. They came out with a bit more passion than the first quarter. Jason Stefanuca tore the opposition to shreds, but he too was unlucky as he only converted a handful of lay ups. The smallest man on the court, Francis Price, fought like a tiger and grabbed some much-needed offensive rebounds. The third quarter ended a draw 13-13.
In the final quarter TCS finally started to play like a team, they moved the ball well and put away a few baskets. Evan Fleming played some strong defence which lead to several fast breaks. Jason Stefanuca started to turn on the heat and used his power and strength to pick away at the Joey’s defence. He converted several baskets to finish up with a tally of 21 points.
The lads were extremely lucky in this game. Joey’s had several chances to take the game, but failed to capitalise on them. They will need to enter the Semi Final with a different attitude if they hope to bring home some silverware. I am sure the lads can do this as they have shown great promise in the past. They will pick it back up in training in preparation for the next game.
Final Score 23 – 13
MVP – Jason Stefanuca
