Guidance Department: Ms C Hilliard, Guidance Counsellor

The role of the Guidance Counsellor is to work both directly with students and in conjunction other school staff as part of a whole school approach to Guidance. Receiving referrals from: Year Heads, Teachers, Parents and Students themselves, the Guidance Department promotes and aims to enhance the support system for students within the school.

The holistic development of the student is a central tenet of the educational values of Tallaght Community School.

The work of the guidance department can be categorised into three main areas. The three areas are as follows:

Personal -
> individual counselling- helping pupils develop coping skills they can draw on as the develop and become adults.
> help with transitions as change can lead to difficulties for young people.
> referral to an outside agency.

Educational –
> assist students with choices regarding subjects and levels
> aid motivation and management learning
> showing students how to use available resources, study skills and exam techniques

Career / Vocational -
Working with students to create a plan and help them become motivated self directed learners.
> recognising the different pathways into higher education
> investigating and researching various careers
> negotiating and carrying out appropriate life choices and plans
> identify students strengths and weakness from the results of various interest and  aptitude tests
> informing students of employment opportunities


Career Websites

CAO: This is the official CAO site and has listings of all the CAO courses and the points required. There are web links to all the Institutions as well as to other educational sites. Students can also carry out a demo application to aid them when submitting their course choices. It contains an up-to-date CAO Handbook and students apply to the CAO through this site.   

Qualifax:  This is the national courses database. It contains information on all CAO and PLC courses. It allows students to search courses and access course entry requirements and to access the college websites. It also contains information on Subject Choice and provides an Interest Test and a Careers Event calendar.

Careers Portal:  This is a thorough and very informative database of information. Careers Portal provides useful, relevant and up-to-date information to assist all people when making career decisions. This site contains various sections on Career Planning, Work and Employment and Education and Training. Information on Careers Portal is brought to you from leading Irish public and private organizations.

Career Directions: This is a site with various careers which can be viewed A-Z or by Work Type. Contains a section called 'Career Directions Matching', this category matches you to suitable careers based on your interests and qualifications.

UCAS: applications to all courses at UK universities and colleges are carried out through this website. There are web links to all the Institutions as well as to other educational sites. Students can do a course search and get information about course content and entry requirements

ScoilNet: This is Ireland’s official portal for the Irish Department of Education. Contains resources for Teachers, Students and Parents. : With 7 core subjects at junior and senior cycle, provides complete coverage of key syllabus topics using all the power and potential of interactive learning combined with information on Transition Year and advice for parents This website is a convenient and user-friendly source of information on financial support for Further and Higher education, including Maintenance grants, Scholarships, the Fund for Students with Disabilities, the Back to Education Allowance and the Student Assistance Fund.
